Places to Visit in Rishikesh – Not Just Yoga and Babas

Okay so, Rishikesh is like… one of those places where you go thinking “I’ll just relax and meditate” and end up doing crazy river rafting, eating amazing food and watching sunset by the Ganga wondering what even is life

Located in Uttarakhand, right at the foothills of Himalayas, Rishikesh is super popular for yoga, spiritual stuff, the Ganga river and yes, vibes. It’s like part peaceful-ashram town, part adventure sport capital. Depends on what you looking for, honestly.

So, here’s a (kinda messy) list of places you should def check out if you’re planning a trip. I’m not ranking them, just typing from what I remember. Also this is not a pro travel blog okay, just one human helping another

1. Laxman Jhula & Ram Jhula

So these are like the two famous bridges in Rishikesh. They’re hanging bridges over the Ganga and you can walk across them and see the river below, and feel the wind on your face, it’s super nice.

There’s shops and cafes on both sides, and lots of monkeys (warning: hide your food). Ram Jhula is a bit newer I think, and Laxman Jhula has that classic old-world charm.

Laxman Jhula was closed for some repair last time I went, not sure if it’s open now. Either way, the area around both is full of good vibes and great chai.

2. Triveni Ghat (for Ganga Aarti)

This place hits diff at evening. The Ganga aarti here is not as crowded as the one in Varanasi but still feels very… I dunno, pure. They light diyas, chant mantras, people sit by the river, birds flying, bells ringing – it’s kinda magical.

You can also do Ganga snan (bath) here if that’s your thing. Water’s cold but people say it washes away sins. I just dipped my feet tbh.

Get there around 5:30 PM to get a good spot. And don’t forget to be respectful, it’s a spiritual place.

3. Neelkanth Mahadev Temple

Bit far from the main town, like 30 km or so, but worth the ride. It’s a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, and surrounded by forest and hills.

Story goes that this is the place where Shiva drank the poison (halahala) during Samudra Manthan – if you know, you know.

Roads are bumpy and curvy, so maybe avoid heavy breakfast

4. The Beatles Ashram (aka Chaurasi Kutia)

So this is where the Beatles stayed in the 60s and wrote like 40+ songs or something. It’s now a kinda abandoned ashram taken over by nature and graffiti artists. But it looks so cool.

You walk around and see old meditation huts, broken rooms, walls full of quotes and art. It’s quiet, eerie and beautiful.

Take water and wear shoes, the area’s huge and you’ll end up walking a lot.

5. Shivpuri (River Rafting!)

Okay, if you’re not afraid of falling in cold river water – rafting in Rishikesh is a must. Starts from Shivpuri and goes all the way to Rishikesh town. Rapids are crazy fun, and there’s one point where you can jump off the raft and just float.

Go with registered tour guides, not random ones. They’ll give you helmet, life jacket and all.

Best time is Oct–June (except monsoon). Avoid rainy season coz rafting usually stops.

6. Parmarth Niketan Ashram

This one is not just an ashram but like a whole experience. It’s near Ram Jhula and is one of the biggest ashrams in Rishikesh. Foreigners, locals, yogis – all kinds of people come here to stay and meditate or do yoga.

They also do their own Ganga aarti which is more organized and peaceful than Triveni Ghat one, imo.

Even if you’re not spiritual, just visiting and walking around the garden and riverbank is calming.

7. Tera Manzil Temple

You’ll def see this from Laxman Jhula – it’s a 13-storey temple (despite the name saying “13”, some say it’s more lol). Each floor has diff gods and goddesses and by the time you reach top, you’re tired and also rewarded with an amazing view of the Ganga.

Small tip: Don’t wear heels and carry a bottle of water. It’s not super hard but still, it’s a climb.

8. Neer Garh Waterfall

A lil hidden gem, not that hidden now but still lovely. You trek a bit to reach the falls, and can actually go under the waterfall and chill in the natural pool.

Go early morning to avoid crowds. Also wear proper shoes coz path can be slippery.

Lots of Insta people take photos here, so if you wanna look cool online, this is the place

9. Yoga & Meditation Classes

Okay not exactly a “place” but still important. Rishikesh is like world capital of yoga. There’s yoga schools in every lane. You can do drop-in classes or stay for a full course (some do 200hr teacher training etc).

Some popular places:

  • Anand Prakash Ashram

  • Yoga Vini

  • Rishikul Yogshala

But also, ask around. Some small local teachers are amazing but not online famous.

10. Cafes With River Views

Don’t leave Rishikesh without chilling in one of those cafes by the Ganga. Just sit with a cold coffee or smoothie bowl and watch the river flow. Pure therapy.

Some cafes worth trying:

  • Little Buddha Café

  • Ganga View Café

  • The 60’s Café (Beatles-themed one)

  • Freedom Café

Food is mostly veg everywhere, coz Rishikesh is a holy town. No alcohol or non-veg officially.

But don’t worry, the food’s healthy and yum. Israeli food is big here too, try Shakshuka or hummus plates.

Travel Tips (aka Things I Forgot But You Shouldn’t)

  • Carry cash, some places don’t take UPI or cards.

  • Dress modest, especially near temples and ghats.

  • October to March is best weather. Summers = too hot. Monsoon = too slippery.

  • If you’re scared of monkeys, don’t carry food openly, esp near Laxman Jhula.

  • Book rafting early in season, last-minute plans don’t always work.

  • Respect the vibe. It’s chill, spiritual and peaceful – not a party place.

Final Thoughts

Rishikesh is not one of those “one-day” places. It’s not just about ticking boxes or doing Instagram reels. It’s a place where you slow down, breathe deep, maybe discover something about yourself… or just eat amazing banana pancakes and float in the river

It’s got something for everyone – solo travelers, backpackers, families, couples, yogis, or just tired people who need a break from the noise.

Go there, stay a few days, do nothing or do everything. Rishikesh doesn’t judge
