So, Mumbai. If u never been here, well ur missing something crazy. This city is like chaos and charm had a baby. There’s noise, traffic, so many people, but also there’s something… dunno what… magic maybe? It’s called the City of Dreams for a reason. From bollywood to beaches, and street food that slaps (sometimes literally spicy), there’s a lot going on.
Here’s my try to list some of the most visit-worthy places in Mumbai if you’re planning to drop by or even if you live here but didn’t bother to explore. Some are popular, others not too touristy but still amazing.
1. Gateway of India
Probably most cliche place but you have to go. It’s iconic. Built during british time and still standing tall in Colaba. Right next to the sea and Taj Mahal Palace hotel (which also looks amazing from outside if you can’t afford a coffee there lol). You’ll find crowd always, day or night. Pigeons, tourists, locals, street photographers and that guy selling bubble guns. Classic Mumbai vibe.
Pro tip: Don’t buy overpriced tea from there. Walk a bit and get it from side stalls.
2. Marine Drive
Aah Marine Drive. The Queen’s Necklace. Come here during sunset and you’ll fall in love. It’s just a road next to sea but it’s sooo peaceful. Sit on the stone walls, watch the waves crash, watch people jog, couples cuddle, aunties gossip. Whole of Mumbai seems to come here to chill.
Night time is even better. Lights curve like necklace (hence the name duh) and the wind’s kinda perfect. If you’re lucky you might get rain and waves splashing over. Just hold your phone tight lol.
3. Chor Bazaar
Name means Thieves Market. And it kinda is. You’ll find antiques, old gramophones, typewriters, fake RayBans, Bollywood posters, rusty clocks and also random junk. But that’s the fun. If you’re into vintage stuff or just want to look around weird things, go here. But bargain hard. Like really hard.
Also carry cash, some shops don’t do online. And keep your wallet safe, ironical right?
4. Juhu Beach
Okay, not the cleanest beach out there (don’t go expecting Maldives vibes), but Juhu has its own charm. Crowds, kids, horses, chaat stalls, balloon sellers, and the famous pav bhaji. Don’t leave without eating street food here. If your stomach’s brave enough.
Evening time is best. Sunsets are lovely. Plus you might see some celeb jogging around (they do exist outside Instagram lol).
5. Elephanta Caves
Located on an island, takes a ferry from Gateway of India. The ride itself is fun. Seagulls follow the boat if you throw chips, which is cute and eco-problematic at same time.
The caves have huge stone carvings of gods, mainly Lord Shiva. It’s peaceful, historic, and a bit tiring walk too. But worth it. Just avoid weekend if you hate crowds.
And monkeys. Don’t carry food openly.
6. Sanjay Gandhi National Park
Yes, a forest in Mumbai. Shocking right? But real. It’s in Borivali and HUGE. You can go trekking, visit Kanheri Caves (more stone carvings), spot deers, leopards (very rare) and loads of monkeys (not rare at all). There’s also a toy train inside called Vanrani – kids love it.
Go early morning to avoid heat. And please don’t litter. Nature already dealing with enough.
7. Carter Road & Bandstand
These are sea-facing promenades in Bandra – the hip part of Mumbai. Lot of cafes, fancy crowd, people walking dogs, and Bollywood homes. Shah Rukh Khan lives at Mannat (Bandstand), and sometimes fans just stand outside waiting for him to wave.
Nice place for romantic walk or just chai with sea breeze.
Also: Bandra fort nearby, good for photos and view.
8. Colaba Causeway
Shopaholics, this one’s for you. Endless street stalls selling jewelry, bags, clothes, souvenirs, sunglasses and all the things you don’t need but will still buy. It’s fun even if you don’t buy. Colors everywhere, hustle-bustle, foreigners bargaining like pros.
Tip: Wear comfy shoes. And don’t carry big bags, tight space.
9. Haji Ali Dargah
A mosque in middle of sea – literally. You walk on a narrow pathway with sea on both sides, to reach this beautiful white dargah. It’s peaceful, spiritual, calming. But yeah, check the tide times or you might get stuck.
And avoid Fridays if you don’t like crowds.
10. Crawford Market
If you want to see where real Mumbai shops, go here. From fruits to pets (yeah, there’s a pet section too), spices, dry fruits, cosmetics, decoration stuff… it’s all packed in one place. It’s chaotic, colourful, smells a lot, but fun.
Also close to Mohammad Ali road – heaven for foodies during Ramadan.
Some Offbeat Spots If You Want Something Different
-
Ballard Estate – colonial buildings, very quiet on Sundays, perfect for aesthetic photos.
-
Banganga Tank – Old holy water tank in Walkeshwar, very peaceful and not touristy.
-
Worli Village – Old fishing village hidden near Worli Sea Face. Super interesting to walk through.
-
Prithvi Theatre (Juhu) – Watch a play, sip some Irish coffee, meet artsy crowd.
Final Thoughts
Mumbai isn’t a place, it’s a vibe. It doesn’t welcome you with open arms always. Sometimes it’s messy, humid, loud, and yes the trains will crush your soul. But then it gives back in unexpected ways. A sunset on marine drive, a kind stranger helping you in rain, vada pav that costs 20 rupees but tastes like heaven.
So if you plan to visit, don’t just stick to touristy stuff. Explore lanes, talk to locals, eat the food, and just feel the city. Mumbai grows on you, like slowly, like humidity lol.
Hope this random (and slightly messy) guide helps you in some way. Pack light, wear sunglasses, and get ready to sweat. But it’ll be worth it.
